Guardiola initially praised the effectiveness of Atletico’s method, describing Diego Simeone’s staff as “masters at defending collectively and sitting deep.”

“They performed a 5-5, two traces of 5. In prehistory, now, and in 100,000 years’ time, attacking a 5-5 could be very troublesome,” Guardiola went on, speaking to Movistar. “There’s no area. They’re very aggressive, they defend nicely. It’s laborious, it’s important to have persistence.”

Guardiola’s “prehistory” remark has been interpreted by some in Madrid as a criticism meant to explain Atletico’s method as antiquated.

“In love along with your historical past since PREHISTORY,” Koke responded in an Instagram story posted on Tuesday evening, with a picture of the Atletico Madrid badge. “Proud to be Atleti.”

Atletico didn’t register a single shot on objective through the match, and whereas Metropolis dominated 70% of the possession, they solely managed two photographs on the right track themselves.

“Of their final 20 video games right here, they’ve scored 60 objectives,” Simeone informed Movistar. “We tried to maintain it tight and use the counter-attack. They didn’t get a shot on the right track within the first half, however we couldn’t damage them both. It was a really tactical sport.”

“We defended fairly nicely all sport, aside from the objective,” Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak mentioned. “Metropolis play like that, they’ve loads of possession in opposition to everybody, not simply us. When you go loopy, they’ll punish you. Fortunately we saved a cool head and closed off the areas… We misplaced however the tie isn’t over.”
